When I decided to make this the first week of A Dose of Climate Optimism, my new Friday series with some good news stories from the week, I didn’t anticipate a straight-out apocalyptic scene unfolding in the other part of this country. Therefore, it only seems right to introduce this week’s issue by recognizing the Los Angeles wildfires and the devastation left behind by this climate change event.
It’s becoming increasingly clear that climate change will affect all of us, it’s only a matter of when, so let this serve as another wake-up call to action. Earlier this week we published a piece on how to shift the narrative on your climate story and find ways to maximize your impact. If you haven’t read it already, I recommend giving it a few minutes of your time.
Let it be a year of curiosity, courage, and empowered change!
All my prayers go to LA and everyone impacted! ❤️
Introducing: A Dose of Climate Optimism
Although (real and grounded) climate optimism is so much more than just positive news, learning about things that are going right in this world can help you foster hope and seek inspiration of your own. Therefore, we will share some highlights from the week and shed light on climate optimism from around the world.
Here is this week’s dose of climate optimism!
New York to Fine Fossil Fuel Companies $75 Under New Climate Law
New York state will fine fossil fuel companies a total of $75 billion over the next 25 years to pay for damage caused to the climate under a bill Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law in December.
Biden Creates 2 New National Monuments, Setting a Conservation Record
The Sáttítla Highlands National Monument covers more than 224,000 acres in Northern California and includes the ancestral homelands of the Pit River Tribe and Modoc people. The creation of the two monuments preserves the lands from development and will set a record for the most land and waters conserved by any president, the White House said.
Batteries made from industrial waste could store renewable energy
An industrial waste product has been converted into a component for batteries that can stably store large amounts of charge. Such batteries could perform a vital function for power grids by smoothing out the peaks and troughs of renewable energy.
Words of Hope
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
— Jane Goodall
